The 2nd John Field International Piano and Vocal Competition was held in Dundalk Institute of Technology on 26-27 February 2020 followed by Gala concert of the winners and adjudicators in Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin on the 28th of February.

The goal of the competition was to offer the occasion to once again hear the music of Field, his students, and the composers influences by him. An Irishman by birth, John Field is considered by many to be the founder of the Russian Piano School, which is distinguished by its use of lyricism, melody, expression and, of course, virtuosic technique. As well as being a virtuosic performer, John Field’s playing was likened by his contemporaries to Italian belcanto. For the last two hundred years, the respect in which John Field is held in Russia has helped develop a strong link in classical music between Russia and Ireland.

The competition was initiated by Russian pianist Viktor Ryabchikov and organised by the Irish non-profit organisation Russian Bridge with the support of Louth County Arts Council, Dundalk Institute of Technology and Dundalk Credit Union.

The level of the performances at 2nd John Field competition was extremely high as noticed by all members of International Jury panel: Victor Ryabchikov (Russia), Owen Lorigan (Ireland), Lubov Borukhzon (Russia), Laura Lalazaryants (Armenia), Mariusz CIOŁKO (Poland), Elena Berezkina (Russia), Annalisa Monticell (Italy), Tatiana Sirotina (UK).

“It is difficult to judge children, but level of their performance was truly outstanding this year”, – said Owen Lorigan.

The judgement was organized by international standards: individual, independent with average scoring system amount categories of Diploma participation, 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes and Grand-Prix.
